Isolation of fractions from jimson weed (Datura stramonium) and horsenettle (Solanum carolinense) which contain host plant specificity factors for the tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta)

Isolation of fractions from jimson weed (Datura stramonium) and horsenettle (Solanum carolinense) which contain host plant specificity factors for the tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta)

Dissertation Abstracts International, B 39(4): 1616

The larval feeding stimulation of the tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta) by chemical extracts of two of its natural host plants, Datura stramonium and Solanum carolinense, was investigated. Discrete fractions representing <2.4 p.p.m. of the leaf mass were active at concns. of 0.2 mg/ml. Separation methods began with standard extraction and precipitation procedures and ended with high performance liquid chromatography on microparticulate bonded phase columns.
