Multiplication rate of bluetongue virus in the vector Culicoides variipennis (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) infected orally

Multiplication rate of bluetongue virus in the vector Culicoides variipennis (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) infected orally

Journal of Medical Entomology 15(3): 302-303

Infectivity titrations of triturated females of Culicoides variipennis (Coq.) infected with bluetongue virus incubated at 23 deg C showed that an eclipse phase occurred by day 3 after oral infection. A great increase in titre occurred by day 4 (LD50 for chick embryo = 104), with a slowing in the growth rate for 6 days to day 10 (LD50 = 105) followed by a second burst of virus replication with a 100-fold increase in titre by day 14 (LD50 = 107).
