Nutrient contents and nutrient losses in streams from catchment areas under different systems of land management

Nutrient contents and nutrient losses in streams from catchment areas under different systems of land management

Verhandlungen der Gesellschaft fur Okologie, Gottingen: 397-410

Water samples were taken weekly from July 1972 to May 1975, for analyses of NH4, NO3, P and Cl, in 3 streams in the northern red sandstone area of Hesse: (a) on a forested catchment (Picea abies/Fagus sylvatica); (b) forested like (a), but farmed on the lower slopes (10% of total area); and (c) with 75% of the area in agricultural use. The NO3 and Cl content of the run-off was highest in (c). Total annual N loss was less in (c) than (b) owing to differences in rate of flow.
