On the effect of phorate on germination of cowpea seeds and phytotoxicity to the seedlings

In a pot trial, cowpea seed received 0, 1, 2 and 3 kg a.i. phorate/ha and gave germination of 100, 85, 75 and 47.5%, resp. Phytotoxic symptoms were seen on the cotyledons and were more severe in seedlings receiving the highest rate of phorate. The seedlings were stunted initially with high doses of phorate but they fully recovered and the fresh leaves in all plants were free of phytotoxic symptoms.
