Onchocerciasis and Simulium control in the Volta River Basin

The control in the Volta River Basin of West Africa of onchocerciasis caused by Onchocerca volvulus and transmitted by species of the complex of Simulium damnosum Theo., especially with the aid of insecticides applied from aircraft against the larvae of the simuliid vectors, is reviewed. The WHO programme covers an area of 700 000 km2, embracing 7 countries (Upper Volta, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Niger, Mali and Ivory Coast) in which an estimated one million people are affected.
