The results of many previous studies by the same author are used to support the theory that the AABB genome developed from the SSAA genome. The latter is said to have arisen as an amphidiploid following natural hybridization between Aegilops speltoides (SS) and Triticum boeoticum (AA) in the Zagros mountains where both occur wild.
