Abstract
For 12 weeks 6 Haryana cows were given a basal farm diet of jowar forage, wheat straw and 1.5 kg concentrates and 6 were given a forage diet of jowar forage and berseem hay for the first 4 weeks, jowar forage and cowpea and wheat bran for weeks 5 to 10 and jowar silage and cowpea for weeks 10 to 12, with 0.5 kg wheat bran in all periods. Daily yields on the farm diet were between 1.91 and 3.33 kg, and for those given forage based diets between 2.00 and 4.08 kg. There was a greater percentage of milk fat and yield of 4% fat-corrected milk on the forage diet but milk had less solids-not-fat. There was no significant difference in reproductive performance.
