Relation of different levels of dietary vitamin A of laying hens to vitamin A content of egg yolk and newly hatched chicks

Relation of different levels of dietary vitamin A of laying hens to vitamin A content of egg yolk and newly hatched chicks

Indian Veterinary Journal 55(7): 554-558

ISSN/ISBN: 0019-6479

White Leghorn pullets which had low reserves of vitamin A were fed diets with vitamin A 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000 or 8000 IU/kg from maturity for 280 days. There were 10 experimental periods of 28 days. Vitamin A in egg yolk was determined on all eggs collected on the 23rd, 24th and 25th days of periods 1 to 4 and 6 to 10. As dietary vitamin A increased the vitamin A in yolk increased. Differences were found among periods; maximum vitamin A deposition was in eggs laid immediately after the start of production. Following artificial insemination, eggs which were collected during the 4th, 7th and 9th periods were hatched. Two replicates of 3 chickens/treatment were killed and their livers and yolk sacs removed and pooled. Chickens from eggs laid by birds given diets with 2000 to 8000 IU/kg had 9.7, 22.5, 36.1, 42.1, 48.1, 64.2 and 69.0 IU vitamin A respectively in yolk sac plus liver.
