Relationship between the oxygen isotope ratios of terrestrial plant cellulose, carbon dioxide, and water

Relationship between the oxygen isotope ratios of terrestrial plant cellulose, carbon dioxide, and water

Science 204(4388): 51-53

The ratios of 18O:16O of cellulose purified from 2 sets of wheat plants grown under similar conditions, except for a large difference in the 18O:16O ratios of the CO2 supplied to them, differed by only a small amount. The difference in the 18O:16O ratios of the cellulose was similar to that observed for the 18O:16O ratios of the water present in the plants.
