Relationship of feed efficiency to carcass composition and metabolic rate in laying birds

The 100 Single-Comb White Leghorn laying hens were classed as efficient or inefficient convertors of feed to egg. Four efficient and 3 inefficient hens were studied further by indirect calorimetry and the rest were analysed. Efficient and inefficient hens laying 13.5 to 15.5 kg eggs in 48 weeks had similar bodyweight gains and did not differ significantly in carcass protein or fat.
