Among 38 Vigna unguiculata cultivars and breeding lines inoculated with Rhizobium and grown in the field and greenhouse, acetylene reduction varied elevenfold, sixfold and sixfold when expressed on the basis of plant weight, nodule number and nodule weight, respectively. Nitrogen fixation was correlated with nodule number, nodule weight and concentration of leaf chlorophyll.
