Relationship of root injury to the kresek phase of bacterial blight of rice

Inoculation by dipping roots of rice seedlings, pulled from seedbeds with or without attendant root injury, in a bacterial suspension of Xanthomonas oryzae, resulted in severe kresek infection. Sowing seeds directly in a seedbed infested with the bacteria yielded little kresek. If roots of the plants were artificially wounded, the percentage of kresek-infected plants was similar to that of the transplanted rice seedlings. When the soil of the seedbed was inoculated at different times, the highest percentage of kresek was produced at the time closest to transplanting. No kresek was observed when seedbeds were infested at the time of sowing. Seven days after sowing, seedlings raised in a dapog seedbed developed less kresek infection than did seedlings of the same age from an ordinary seedbed.
