Relationships between cold tolerance and seedling age in Italian ryegrass cultivars with different vernalization requirements

Relationships between cold tolerance and seedling age in Italian ryegrass cultivars with different vernalization requirements

Constraints to grass growth and grassland output Proceedings of the 7th General Meeting of the European Grassland Federation 1978: 1.21-1.27

In controlled environment trials the cold tolerance and tiller survival of Italian ryegrass Raia seedlings from the age of 15 days (3- to 4-leaf stage) to 60 days (10- to 11-tiller stage) was tested. For seedlings aged 49, 58, 68 and 76 days, number of tillers/plant was 4.6, 5.6, 9.9 and 13.4; percentage DM was 15.0, 17.0, 19.1 and 19.6%, water soluble C was 22.4, 25.0, 30.8 and 32.5% and percentage tiller survival after 2 h at -25 deg C was 62, 82, 82 and 72%, resp.
