Relationships between size, biomass, water and fat content in two species of Collembola with reference to their distribution in the cave of Sainte-Catherine (Ariege, France)

Relationships between size, biomass, water and fat content in two species of Collembola with reference to their distribution in the cave of Sainte-Catherine (Ariege, France)

Revue d' Ecologie et de Biologie du Sol 15(1): 89-101

Two species of Collembola (Tomocerus problematicus, T. minor) living in a cave in the Pyrenean Mountains, were compared with respect to size, weight, and fat and water contents. The fat content of T. problematicus, normally a cavedweller, was greater than that of T. minor, normally inhabiting the litter layer of forests and here living in the mouth of the cave. The inverse was true for water content.
