Relative constancy of glucose and insulin concentrations in blood of pigs in conditions of the intravenous glucose tolerance test

Relative constancy of glucose and insulin concentrations in blood of pigs in conditions of the intravenous glucose tolerance test

Monatshefte fur Veterinarmedizin 34(9): 340-343

On 4 consecutive days 4 Landrace pigs weighing 40 to 50 kg were given glucose 1 g/kg bodyweight in 8 to 10 min by infusion and blood was sampled at intervals for up to 60 min later. Plasma glucose, about 50 mg/100 ml initially, increased to between 260 and 370 at 5 min, was still high at 10 min but by 30 min was between 60 and 200 and by 60 min was 35 to 100 mg/100 ml. Insulin, which was 35 to 40 mu Eq/ml initially, was greatest after 10 min, 75 to 185 and was 45 to 175 mu Eq/ml after 60 min.
