Relative importance of food and water sources to cadmium uptake by Gambusia affinis (Poeciliidae)

Relative importance of food and water sources to cadmium uptake by Gambusia affinis (Poeciliidae)

Environmental Research 16(1-3): 326-332

The relative importance of food and water as Cd sources to the mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis, was studied in a factorially designed experiment with 2 amounts of Cd in food and water after 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks of exposure. There was significant Cd uptake from water but no uptake from food except after 8 weeks in the presence of Cd in water. When exposed to a continuous flow of Cd 10 mu g/litre in water, G. affinis did not reach an equilibrium Cd concentration before 8 weeks.
