Relative importance of performance tests and progeny tests in horse breeding

Relative importance of performance tests and progeny tests in horse breeding

Livestock Production Science 5(3): 303-312

Estimates of genetic gain under mass selection and under a 2-stage programme involving mass selection followed by progeny testing of stallions were compared for trotting and riding horses. For trotters, calculations were made for a single character expressing competition results, while 2 groups of characters, measurable early and late in life, were used in estimates for riding horses. Published values for h2 and phenotypic standard deviations were used.
