Relative irrigation requirement of dwarf durum and aestivum wheats under water constraint in black soils of Tungabhadra Project

Durum wheat HD 4500, HD 4501, HD 4502 and HD 4503 and bread wheat Kalyan Sona were grown in 1970-1 and 1971-2 and given up to 5 irrigations. Kalyan Sona gave av. grain yield of 2.39 t/ha and consistently outyielded the durum wheats which yielded on av. 1.42-1.70 t/ha. Av. yields increased from 925 kg to 2.64 t/ha with increasing number of irrigations from 0 to 5, mainly due to an increase in plant population and number of grains/ear.
