Release of a new variety: Aleppo 40 tolerant to wilt with better qualities

The performance of the cotton Aleppo 40, formed from the cross Acala AJ1 X Aleppo 1 was studied in trials throughout Syria in 1974-6. The av. seed-cotton yield was 4.16 t/ha, 4.7% greater than Aleppo 1. It showed high tolerance to wilt yielding 11.2% more than Aleppo 1 at wilt-infected sites, compared with 3.5% less at uninfested sites. Fibre length (1.045 in) and strength (190 000 lb/in2) were also improved.
