Removal of lead compounds from the air by plants

Removal of lead compounds from the air by plants

Ukrains' kii Botanichnii Zhurnal 35(3): 246-248

Experiments on main roads in Kiev show that Aesculus hippocastanum, Tilia cordata and Populus nigra on roadsides absorb and accumulate lead compounds from traffic exhaust fumes: the accumulated Pb can be up to 40 mg/kg leaf DM over the summer season. Amounts decrease with distance from the road, those for A. hippocastanum (the most effective absorber) decreasing from 40 mg/kg at 1 m distance to around 12 mg/kg at 30 m. The use of inorganic fertilizers increases accumulation from air and soil.
