Resistance of wood from paraquat-treated southern pines to subterranean termites, decay fungi, and marine borers

Sapwood, from slash, longleaf and loblolly pines (Pinus elliottii, P. palustris and P. taeda), treated 18 months previously with paraquat to induce lightwood, was exposed to marine borers (Teredo diegensis, T. panamensis, Martesia striata and Bankia zeteki), decay fungi, and termites (Reticulitermes spp., Coptotermes spp. and Heterotermes spp.). Samples of treated wood were less damaged by all three agents than samples from untreated trees or from the untreated side of treated trees.
