Response of Maryland tobacco cultivars to various rates of nitrogen fertilization

In field trials in 1973-6 at Upper Marlboro, Maryland on a Monmouth fine sandy loam, 6 tobacco were grown with 89.6, 112.0, 134.4 or 156.8 kg N/ha. With increasing N rate there was an increase in av. leaf yield from 1.97 to 2.27 t/ha, and in total alkaloids and total N. Av. leaf yields for Md. 10, Md. 59, Md. 609, Md. 64, Md. 872 and Md. 201 were 1.94, 1.83, 2.05, 2.44, 2.24 and 2.26 t/ha, resp. There were no significant differences in leaf yields between yr.
