Role of grasses in production and mineral removals in semi-natural grasslands

The botanical and chemical composition and biomass production of a natural grassland in the Moyenne Ardenne (500 m alt.) given P, PK or NPK fertilizers or no fertilizer was studied. Fertilizer application increased the yield of grasses from 2.67 to 4.56 t/ha with NPK. The yield of legumes and other plants was decreased by P alone and NPK and unaffected by PK application. Uptake of N, P, K, Na, Mg and Ca by the grass and legume components was studied.
