In the north of Nigeria most of the traditionally irrigated land along river banks is infested, mainly with Meloidogyne javanica. The growing of vegetable cash crops results in high levels of infestation and low yields. Meloidogyne species have not been found to attack groundnut, rice, cotton, sorghum, millet or maize. Meloidogyne species have become a limiting factor in the production of vegetables in the Kadawa irrigation project.
