Abstract
Thirteen somatic hybrids were obtained following fusion between diploid (2n = 72) wild-type protoplasts of A. belladonna and those from diploid (2n = 24) and tetraploid (2n = 48) chlorophyll-deficient mutants of D. innoxia. Hybrid calluses were recognized by the production of hairs, typical of D. innoxia, their green colour, derived from A. belladonna, and their metaphase chromosomes, those from D. innoxia being about twice the size of those from A. belladonna. The chromosome numbers of the hybrids varied from c. 84 to c. 175.
