In the wet season the early-maturing intermediate statured rice IR9575 and the medium-maturing semidwarf IR2035-117-3 grown in upland culture were given 60 or 90 kg N/ha as (a) urea, (b) S-coated urea or (c) (NH4)2SO4 applied broadcast and incorporated into the soil, placed in bands or applied in split dressings. Av. grain yields for the 2 was highest with (c) at both N levels when applied split at sowing + 30 days after emergence + panicle initiation (3.7 t grain/ha).
