Soluble carbohydrate content and composition in above- and below-ground tissues of Westerwolds ryegrass during winter

Soluble carbohydrate content and composition in above- and below-ground tissues of Westerwolds ryegrass during winter

New Zealand Journal of Agricultural Research 23(1): 93-96

Carbohydrate was measured in tissues of Westerwolds ryegrass Grasslands Tama at weekly intervals during winter in Canterbury. Soluble carbohydrate content in herbage was high (up to 33% of DM); it was higher in stubble (up to 47% of DM) than in leaf (up to 27% of DM) and was low in roots (< 11% of DM). Soluble carbohydrate contents fluctuated more in stubble than in leaf tissue and roots.
