Some photosynthetic characteristics of apple, pear, protea, olive and grape-vine leaves

Studies were made of the rates of net photosynthesis (PN) and light respiration (RL) of plants of Golden Delicious apples, Packham's Triumph pear, Protea cynaroides, Mission olive and Jacquez grapevine rootstock. Increasing light intensity stimulated the CO2 gas exchange rate and PN and RL rose proportionally above the threshold light intensity of 80 W/m-2. Changes in temperature between 15 deg and 25 deg C had little effect but at 35 deg the RL:PN ratio was increased.
