In a series of experiments, the effects of straw size, glycerol equilibration time, thawing temp., centrifugation and diluent composition on the motility and survival of spermatozoa in semen from Landrace, Duroc-Jersey and Hampshire boars were investigated. Post-thawing sperm survival was greatest in diluted semen exposed to glycerol for 4 h prior to freezing, and thawed at 40 deg C. Semen frozen in 0.5 ml straws had a higher post-thawing sperm survival rate than semen in 1.0 ml straws.
