Studies on irradiated pollen grains in the oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.)

Pollen grains from palms of the pisifera type were gamma irradiated and grown on an agar medium. Viability and pollen tube growth were not affected by radiation within the dose range studied (0-5 krad). When used for artificial fertilization, irradiated pollen caused a significant mean decrease in fruit : bunch and kernel : fruit ratios.
