In laboratory and practical studies, contents of NO3 and NO2 in the original forage and conserved material were evaluated. Good quality silage contained 70-75% of the NO3 in the original forage, whereas poor quality butyric acid silage was generally free of NO3. The use of formic acid as a silage additive restricted NO3 breakdown. NO2 was not detected in silage which was at least 3 months old. During temporary storage of fresh forage considerable amounts of NO3 can be converted into NO2.
