On a lowland gley soil, drainage of a rice field with earthenware pipes gave yields of 4.82 t unpolished grain/ha while rice hull drainage gave 4.89 and 5.03 t depending on the method of installation. In a similar trial on upland gley soil, earthenware drains gave 5.02 t/ha while rice hulls gave 5.46 and 5.17 t/ha. In the lowland soil yields were 6.24 t when flood water was drained off at earing, 5.7 t when it was drained off 7 days later and 5.36 t when it was drained off 14 days later.
