Studies on root growth of seedlings of various maize lines in relation to temperature

Plants of maize inbred lines were raised in polyethylene tubes at 15 or 25 deg C and their shoot and root growth was studied at the 3-leaf stage. The plants took 3 times as long to reach the 3-leaf stage at 15 deg as at 25 deg C. Differentiation of roots was much weaker at 15 deg , the development of secondary radicles and 1st order lateral roots being more affected than the length of the main radicle.
