Studies on ruminating behaviour and the digestive physiological significance of rumination

Studies on ruminating behaviour and the digestive physiological significance of rumination

Report of Hokkaido Prefectural Agricultural Experiment Stations (30): 72

Rumination behaviour was studied using sheep and cattle. Increasing the amount of hay in the diet gave a curvilinear increase in rumination time. Fasting decreased rumination and it was replaced by pseudorumination. Ground hay decreased rumination time and gave pseudorumination, but cubed hay decreased rumination time without pseudorumination. Rumination decreased with decreasing silage chopping length and with silage that had been frozen and thawed.
