Studies on the West African I strain of Plasmodium falciparum in Aotus trivirgatus monkeys

Studies on the West African I strain of Plasmodium falciparum in Aotus trivirgatus monkeys

Journal of Parasitology 65(5): 763-767

The West African I strain of Plasmodium falciparum was isolated from an airline pilot who had an overnight stay in Nigeria. In the Aotus trivirgatus griseimembra monkey, the parasite produced high parasitaemias and readily infected mosquitoes. Anopheles freeborni and A. maculatus transmitted the infection. Infected salivary glands were also seen in A. culicifacies. The most susceptible mosquito was A. freeborni, followed by A. culicifacies, A. maculatus and A. balabacensis balabacensis.
