Studies on the adaptability of imported Merino sheep to climatic conditions prevailing at the sheep breeding research station, Sandynallah

Cheiron 8(1): 6-11

Morning and afternoon rectal temps. were measured at weekly intervals over a 3-yr period in 12 Merino and 12 Nilgiri rams, and in 12 Merino and 12 Nilgiri ewes. The temp. and RH of the shed in which they were kept overnight and for 1 h in the afternoon were also measured. The rectal temp. of Merino and Nilgiri sheep averaged 39.01 deg and 38.11 deg C resp. Analysis of variance indicated that time of day, but not breed and sex, had a significant effect on rectal temp.
