The slow-release N fertilizers isobuthyridene diurea (IB) ureaform (UF) and crotonylidene diurea (CDU) were tested on maize, sugar beet and Azuki beans grown on an infertile brown andosol soil susceptible to leaching. In maize given 200 kg N/ha grain yields decreased in the order 'straight' fertilizer > IB compound fertilizer > UF compound fertilizer > standard compound fertilizer > CDU compound fertilizer when the ratio of slow to fast-release N was 1:1.
