Studies on the bionomics of cowpea leaf beetle, Ootheca mutabilis

Studies on the bionomics of cowpea leaf beetle, Ootheca mutabilis

Van Emden, H F : Pests of grain legumes: ecology and control: 187-191

An account is given of the life-history and behaviour of Ootheca mutabilis (Sahlb.), which is an important leaf-feeding pest of cowpea and also transmits cowpea yellow mosaic virus, based on laboratory, greenhouse and field observations in Nigeria. The full-fed larva and adult are described. The females were found to insert their eggs into the soil on or near the roots and laid 224-577 eggs each in batches containing 54-78 eggs. The larvae developed in the soil and pupated in an earthern cell.
