A field survey showed that C. rotundus was present on all soil types in North Sumatra at altitudes of 3-1386 m and with an annual rainfall of 1556-4000 mm. A summed dominance ratio (SDR) of >75% was shown by the weed in upland rice and maize. As a short plant, it competes for nutrients and water rather than for light, indicating competition via the roots; allelopathy is also indicated.
