Studies on the haemolymph of honeybees. 6. Figured elements in the haemolymph of the queen honeybee, examined in smears

Studies on the haemolymph of honeybees. 6. Figured elements in the haemolymph of the queen honeybee, examined in smears

Redia 60: 333-359 + 6 pl.

Haemolymph from the head, thorax and abdomen of 64 queens from 0 to 3 years old was examined. Some of the haemocyte forms were similar to those seen in worker haemolymph; e.g. leucocytes, proleucocytes, free nuclei. Haemocyte clumps and other forms of cells, called types (tipi), were also seen. The proportions of cells changed with age; of the figured elements which were always present, leucocytes formed the highest proportion, with a peak of 70% in queens 3-4 months old.
