In excised etiolated hypocotyls of Phaseolus vulgaris and Phaseolus aureus 10 and 100 mM galactose stimulated ethylene synthesis and inhibited hypocotyl elongation, anthocyanin synthesis and hypocotyl hook opening. It was suggested that galactose 1-phosphate was the toxic metabolite and might possibly be the factor promoting ethylene synthesis.
