Studies on the nitrogen management in upland rainfed rice. 1. Effect of time of nitrogen application on grain yield, its components, and nitrogen uptake

When the dwarf varieties Padma and Jaya and the tall Nagina (all indica) were given applications of N ranging from 0 to 120 kg at sowing, tillering, panicle initiation or heading, Padma gave the highest yield, owing to a higher number of panicles per m2, a higher percentage of ripened grains per panicle and a higher 100-grain weight; Padma also had the highest grain protein content and absorbed the most N.
