In a pot trial, plants of (a) Indigofera sp. or (b) Trigonella sp. were grown in sterile sand culture with no inoculation of Rhizobium or with inoculation with the incorrect strain of Rhizobium ((a) with Rhizobium from (b) and vice versa) or with the correct strain of Rhizobium or were grown in soil containing natural Rhizobium populations; field-grown plants were used as a control.
