Studies on the paralytic and toxic effects of Risella 17 oil and other related chemicals on some dipterans

Studies on the paralytic and toxic effects of Risella 17 oil and other related chemicals on some dipterans

Malaysian Applied Biology 7(2): 87-92

The results are given of further investigations on the paralysing effects of Risella 17 oil (a refined mineral oil commonly used in insecticide formulations) on Diptera Topical applications on the abdomen induced leg paralysis in Phormia terraenovae R.-D. (treated at the rates of 0.3-0.5 mu l oil/insect) and in Sarcophaga argyrostoma (R.-D.) (falculata Pand.) (treated at 0.5 mu l) as well as in the previous test insect, Lucilia sericata (Mg.) (treated at 0.1-0.3 mu l), but not in Musca domestica L. (treated at 0.2-0.3 mu l), in which it caused some mortality. The related aliphatic hydrocarbons Risella 33 and hexadecane, applied at 0.3 mu l on P. terraenovae, also induced leg paralysis, as did hexadecane applied at 0.1-0.3 mu l on L. sericata. The alcohol 1-decanol applied at 0.3 mu l on P. terraenovae caused both leg paralysis and mortality, whereas at 0.1-0.3 mu l on L. sericata it caused rapid and high mortality without paralysis. Glyceryl trioleate caused mortality without paralysis in both L. sericata and P. terraenovae, and olive oil caused mortality when tested against the second species. Other compounds tested had no effect. The progress of symptoms varied between the chemicals and appeared to be connected with their molecular weight.
