Studies on the prepenetration of Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary on potato leaves and its relation to general resistance

Using races 1.4 and 1.2, eight varieties with different levels of resistance were studied. Although germination time was similar on the leaves of all varieties, significantly fewer sporangia germinated on the adaxial leaf surface of highly resistant F61101 and Dorita than on the other varieties. The higher level of germination on slightly resistant Kennebec than on Dorita was associated with a high concentration of aminoacids in leaf leachates from the former variety.
