Early, intermediate and late maize were grown in central, piedmont and coastal areas of Hokkaido. During ripening increases in DM and TDN yields were mainly due to ear production. The DM content of 25-35% suitable for silage making was reached at early or late dent stage or glaze stage of ripeness. Early were best adapted to the area as they were at the best stage for cutting for c. 1 wk. while for intermediate the period was short and for late it was very short.
