Synchronisation of oestrus in multiparous sows, with special reference to the length of the weaning period and the use of PMS and HCG

In a 3 X 3 factorial experiment, 162 sows were treated with 400, 600 or 800 IU PMS and 3 levels of HCG (1/4, 1/3 or 1/2 of the PMS dose). 96.9% of treated sows showed synchronised oestrus within 8 days of weaning, with an av. period of 4.8 days between treatment and oestrus (range = 3-8 days). No significant differences were found between gonadotropin dosages. 13 sows showed only weak signs of oestrus.
