The influence of herbicides on major field crops in the newly reclaimed areas of Egypt. 1. Effect of pre-emergence application of herbicides on rice, cotton, maize and wheat seedling growth

Atrazine, linuron, 2,4-D, trifluralin, fluometuron, molinate and propanil were applied pre-em. at various rates to wheat, cotton, maize and rice in pots. Wheat seedlings were very sensitive to all the herbicides at all rates except 2,4-D at 0.5 and 1 litre/faddan (4200 m2). Cotton seedlings were not injured by trifluralin at 1 litre/faddan or by fluometuron at 1.5-2 kg/faddan. The other herbicides damaged or killed the cotton seedlings, especially at the higher concns.
