The onchocerciasis control programme and the monitoring of its effect on the riverine biology of the Volta River Basin

The onchocerciasis control programme and the monitoring of its effect on the riverine biology of the Volta River Basin

Perring, FH and Mellanby, K Editors Ecological effects of pesticides Linnean Society Symposium Series No 5: 133-143

This paper outlines the problems which arose when designing and setting up the WHO monitoring programme in connection with the control of onchocerciasis in the Volta River Basin. The techniques of monitoring the effect of abate on non-target organisms are described and early results (after 18 months) are discussed. So far there are no discernible effects on the fish in the programme area.
