The residual effect of fertilizer nitrogen applied to potatoes on the yield of following spring barley and the contents of mineral nitrogen in the soil

In field trials in 1974-6 on pseudopodzolic soils, spring barley was grown following potatoes which had been given 40, 80, 120, 160 or 200 kg N/ha. Barley following potatoes given 80-200 kg N/ha yielded 1.9-3.2% more grain and 2.9-8.2% more straw than barley which followed potatoes given 40 kg N/ha. The residual effect of 1 kg N on increased grain yield was greatest at an application rate of 80 kg N/ha but less with higher rates of N.
